Voting is a basic civil rights as a citizen of these United States.
But it seems that our rights to express ourselves, who we wish to lead, because they understand what it means
to be a servant to all,
is endangered
*[5] WHEREAS, the United States Supreme Court has recently held Section 4(b) of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional, a holding that four of the Court’s nine justices believe “terminates the remedy that proved to be best suited to block that discrimination” (US Supreme Court, Shelby County v. Holder, 133 S. Ct. 2012 (2013), dissenting opinion by Justice Ginsburg ; and
* [6] WHEREAS, this church has recognized that many find it difficult to participate in public life “because of racial or ethnic barriers, and it has committed to “actively promote a public life worthy of the name … encourage public witness by members, and stand publicly as a church against injustice” (ELCA Social Statement on Race, Ethnicity, and Culture, p. 6); and
*[7] WHEREAS, this church has established, as a matter of social policy, that it “will support legislation, ordinances, and resolutions that guarantee … to all citizens, the right to vote” (ELCA Social Statement on Race, Ethnicity, and Culture, p. 7)
Sometimes we find when we are called to this ministry and mission,
We find out voice, we raise our voice, we pour out our passions
Nurtured, empowered along this Seminarian journey allows for the foundation and the encouragement for
what God has called us all to
to actually be lived out
Because of this place, and the community within, it helped me fuel writing this Voters Rights Social Policy Resolution, presented to the ELCA Churchwide Assembly last year-
and assisted by wonderful fellow sisters and brothers in Christ, some who were alums of LSTC
Seminary community never is far from you, even as we leave and enter new communities of faith
many whom we are called to lead
Seminary pours into who we are as a collective community of faith, the knowledge and wisdom to actively do theology
to proclaim prophetically what the Good News means for all of humanity
reminding us why we are here
to serve those who have been forgotten by this world,
reminding them that they are children of God.
I recently attended the Conference of Bishops to explore this timely issue once more
and I am so very thankful that the wider community of faith
is hearing the call
of freeing our minds and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us
towards justice, mercy and peace.
